Restaurant Oepfelchammer, Zurich

At the Oepfelchammer restaurant in Zurich’s medieval Old Town, time seems to stand still – and that’s what’s made it so appealing. For 224 years.

Indulgence remains indulgence

The Oepfelchammer has been a fixture of Zurich’s Niederdorf district since 1801. Those who choose to drop by are quick to lose track of time – such as regular Gottfried Keller, who almost missed being appointed First Official Secretary of Zurich because he was enjoying the food and wine there so much. Visually, almost nothing has been altered at the "Oeli" since those days. One of the few things to have changed is that the number of guests’ names carved into the dark wood has increased.

The cuisine? Very traditional – and very tasty. With all their passion, the hosts have crafted a menu which perfectly matches the rustic charm of the restaurant. They rummaged through antique shops for old cookbooks – and have revived traditional Zurich recipes with a modern twist. By the way: Until the end of September 2025, the hosts will offer you a free glass of wine if you pay with your American Express Card.

What do the guests order, what does the chef love?

When things quiet down at the bustling Oeli, the head chef treats himself to his own creation, cod ceviche, before pulling out the pan and cooking up the house classic for himself: Oepfelchammer's veal meatloaf. It's also a big hit with guests, as is the gently cooked halibut. The hand-carved beef tartare, meanwhile, is a popular starter. And to top it all off? Baked apple fritters or white chocolate cheesecake. And if reading this has made you hungry – welcome to the club!

Take advantage of a free glass of wine when you visit the Oepfelchammere restaurant, with a minimum purchase of CHF 50.-.

de MATOS, Lucerne

Punk rock to accompany a five-course menu? Chef Oscar de Matos has found his match made in heaven. A fan of the unconventional, both in terms of what he plates up and the music he plays. Fine dining with a difference.
