Japan in the heart of Basel

"People come to my store because they want to feel closer to Japan," explains owner Michèle Heer, who is, incidentally, half-Japanese. Basel and Tokyo are some 9,500 kilometers apart as the crow flies – but here, it seems that one step across the threshold is all it takes to arrive. Welcome to a short stay in the Land of the Rising Sun, no boarding pass required.

A "Japanese department store" on four floors

What Michèle Heer has created in two historic old townhouses in Basel’s Gerbergässlein alley is a four-floor Japanese department store. From stationery to complete home furnishings, it is possible to find almost everything here that puts a song in the

heart of lovers of design. And that by no means applies to Japan enthusiasts only. The meticulously designed and aesthetically pleasing products are sure to delight everyone who appreciates the beauty of simplicity: And those visiting the premises quickly realize this isn’t about souvenirs, it’s about a philosophy.
